Study the Word

The words as they are sung, and Hebrews 11 itself: Paul Whitehorn's translation beside the Greek.

Verse 1

Faith is standing on what we hope for

sure of what we cannot see

this is how the old ones

were spoken well of

By faith we understand

the ages were set in order by the word of God

so what we see

was not made out of what shows

By faith Abel brought a better offering than Cain

and God spoke well of his gifts

he died

but he is still speaking

By faith Enoch was taken up

he never saw death

nobody could find him

because God took him away

Build

Without faith

you can't please Him

whoever comes to God must believe He is

and He pays back the ones who search for Him

Drop

By faith Noah, warned of things not yet seen

built an ark in holy fear

to save his house

Verse 2

By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called

to go out to a place he would get as his own

and he went out

not knowing where he was going

He lived as a stranger in the promised land

in tents with Isaac and Jacob

waiting for the city with foundations

the city God designed and built Himself

By faith Sarah, long past her years

was given strength to have a child

because she counted Him faithful

the One who promised

So from one man, as good as dead

came children like the stars in the sky

like sand along the shore

that no one can count

DROP into Chorus

By faith

they died not holding what was promised

they saw it far off and waved to it

strangers on the earth

looking for a home

God is not ashamed to be their God

He has built a city for them

Verse 3

By faith Abraham, when he was tested

offered up Isaac, his only son

the one who held the promises

Your seed will be named through Isaac

He reckoned God could raise the dead

and in a way

he got him back from death

By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau

Jacob, dying, blessed Joseph's sons

Joseph spoke of the exodus

and gave orders about his bones

Verse 4

By faith Moses was hidden three months

his parents saw a beautiful child

and were not afraid of the king's command

By faith Moses, grown up

would not be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter

choosing hard times with the people of God

over the short pleasure of sin

He counted the shame of Christ

richer than the treasures of Egypt

he was looking ahead to the reward

By faith he left Egypt

not afraid of the king's rage

he held on

like he could see the One no one can see

Build

By faith the Passover and the blood

by faith they crossed the Red Sea like dry ground

by faith the walls of Jericho fell

by faith Rahab welcomed the spies in peace

Bridge

And what more should I say

there's no time to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah

of David and Samuel and the prophets

Drop

who through faith took down kingdoms

shut the mouths of lions

put out the power of fire

made strong out of weakness

turned armies back

Women got their dead back

raised to life

Others were tortured

and would not take release

to rise to a better life

others were mocked and whipped

put in chains and in prison

They were stoned

they were sawn in two

they died by the sword

they wandered in sheepskins and goatskins

Left out of this song

Hebrews 11:15

If they had been thinking about the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return.

Hebrews 11:38

The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in caves and holes in the ground.

Hebrews 11:39

And all these, though they were approved through their faith, did not receive what was promised,

Hebrews 11:40

since God had provided something better for us, so that they would not be made perfect without us.

Lyrics by Paul Whitehorn: a singable summary of Hebrews 11, as sung on this recording.

1

Now faith is the solid ground of what we hope for, the proof of things we cannot see.

Ἔστινto be δὲnow, but πίστιςfaith, trust ἐλπιζομένωνto hope ὑπόστασις,solid ground, substance, assurance πραγμάτωνthing, matter ἔλεγχοςproof, conviction οὐnot βλεπομένων·to see

2

For by faith the people of old received God's approval.

ἐνin, by ταύτῃthis γὰρfor ἐμαρτυρήθησανto bear witness, attest οἱthe πρεσβύτεροι.elder, person of old

3

By faith we understand that the universe was formed by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

πίστειfaith, trust νοοῦμενto understand, perceive κατηρτίσθαιto form, put in order τοὺςthe αἰῶναςage; the ages, the universe ῥήματιspoken word θεοῦ,God εἰςinto, so that τὸthe μὴnot ἐκout of, from φαινομένωνto appear, be visible τὸthe βλεπόμενονto see γεγονέναι.to come to be, be made

4

By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did, and through it he was approved as righteous, God himself bearing witness to his gifts. And through his faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.

Πίστειfaith, trust πλείοναmuch, great; here 'better, greater' θυσίανsacrifice ἍβελAbel παρὰthan, beside ΚάϊνCain προσήνεγκενto offer, bring τῷthe θεῷ,God δι’through ἧςwho, which ἐμαρτυρήθηto bear witness, attest εἶναιto be δίκαιος,righteous μαρτυροῦντοςto bear witness, attest ἐπὶupon, concerning τοῖςthe δώροιςgift αὐτοῦhe, his, it τοῦthe θεοῦ,God καὶand, also δι’through αὐτῆςhe, his, it ἀποθανὼνto die ἔτιstill, yet λαλεῖ.to speak

5

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, and he could not be found, because God had taken him. For before he was taken, he was approved as one who pleased God.

Πίστειfaith, trust ἙνὼχEnoch μετετέθηto remove, take away, transfer τοῦthe μὴnot ἰδεῖνto see θάνατον,death καὶand, also οὐχnot ηὑρίσκετοto find διότιbecause μετέθηκενto remove, take away, transfer αὐτὸνhe, his, it ὁthe θεός·God πρὸbefore γὰρfor τῆςthe μεταθέσεωςremoval, taking away μεμαρτύρηταιto bear witness, attest εὐαρεστηκέναιto please τῷthe θεῷ,God

6

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

χωρὶςwithout, apart from δὲnow, but πίστεωςfaith, trust ἀδύνατονimpossible εὐαρεστῆσαι,to please πιστεῦσαιto believe γὰρfor δεῖit is necessary (δεῖ) τὸνthe προσερχόμενονto come to, approach τῷthe θεῷGod ὅτιthat ἔστινto be καὶand, also τοῖςthe ἐκζητοῦσινto seek out αὐτὸνhe, his, it μισθαποδότηςrewarder, one who pays back γίνεται.to come to be, be made

7

By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, took the warning to heart and built an ark to save his household. By his faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed and went out to a place he was going to receive as an inheritance, and he went out not knowing where he was going.

9

By faith he lived as a foreigner in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise.

πίστειfaith, trust παρῴκησενI sojourn εἰςinto, so that γῆνthe earth, soil, land τῆςthe ἐπαγγελίαςa promise ὡςas, like as, how, while, so that ἀλλοτρίαν,belonging to another person, foreign ἐνin, by σκηναῖςa tent, tabernacle κατοικήσαςI dwell in, settle in, inhabit μετὰwith, after ἸσαὰκIsaac καὶand, also ἸακὼβJacob τῶνthe συγκληρονόμωνa joint heir, participant τῆςthe ἐπαγγελίαςa promise τῆςthe αὐτῆς·he, his, it

10

For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.

11

By faith even Sarah herself, who was barren, received power to conceive, even though she was past the age, since she considered the one who had promised to be faithful.

13

All these people died in faith without receiving the things promised. They saw them from a distance and welcomed them, and they admitted that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

Each song is a dynamic equivalent of its chapter, made to help you memorize what is generally there. These are broad summaries. They are not a perfect preservation of everything in Hebrews, and they do not try to be.

We have worked hard to stay faithful to the original. Where we knowingly left something out for the music, we note it under each song. We believe in God’s perfect word, and we ask His mercy wherever we have fallen short. We made these songs to surround ourselves with as much of His word as we can.

Read the chapter itself to receive the full meaning of God’s word.
