Study the Word

The words as they are sung, and Hebrews 13 itself: Paul Whitehorn's translation beside the Greek.

Verse 1

Keep loving each other like family

don't forget to open your door to strangers

some had angels in their house

and never knew

Remember the ones in chains

like you were chained with them

the ones mistreated

since you have a body too

Let marriage be honored by everyone

the marriage bed kept clean

God will judge

the ones who break it

Keep your life free from the love of money

be content with what you have

because He has said

I will never leave you

I will never walk away from you

Refrain

So we can say it out loud

The Lord is my helper

I will not be afraid

what can anyone do to me?

Verse 2

Remember your leaders

who spoke the word of God to you

look at how their lives turned out

and copy their faith

Hook

Jesus Christ

yesterday

today

and on forever

Don't get carried off by strange teachings

it's good for the heart to be made strong by grace

not by food rules

that never helped the ones who kept them

Verse 3

We have an altar

the ones who serve the tent

have no right to eat from it

The high priest carries the blood into the holy place

but the bodies are burned

outside the camp

So Jesus also suffered

outside the gate

to make the people holy

by His own blood

Refrain

So let's go out to Him

outside the camp

carrying the shame He carried

we have no city here that lasts

we're looking for the one to come

Verse 4

Through Him let's keep bringing a sacrifice of praise to God

the fruit of lips

that say His name out loud

Don't forget to do good and share

God is pleased with sacrifices like that

Trust your leaders and follow them

they stay awake over your souls

like men who will give an account

let them do it with joy

not groaning

not groaning

Pray for us

we're sure our conscience is clean

we want to live right in everything

pray hard

so I can come back to you soon

So we can say it out loud

The Lord is my helper

I will not be afraid

what can anyone do to me?

Now may the God of peace

who brought back from the dead

our Lord Jesus

the great Shepherd of the sheep

by the blood of the forever covenant

make you complete in every good thing

to do His will

working in us what pleases Him

through Jesus Christ

to Him be glory forever and ever

Amen

Brothers, bear with this word of comfort

I kept it short

our brother Timothy is free

if he comes soon, I'll see you with him

Greet all your leaders and all the saints

the ones from Italy say hello

Grace be with you all

Left out of this song

As far as we know, nothing in this chapter was left out of the song, though many verses are shortened.

Lyrics by Paul Whitehorn: a singable summary of Hebrews 13, as sung on this recording.

1

Let brotherly love continue.

Ἡthe φιλαδελφίαbrotherly love μενέτω.I remain, abide

2

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing this some have welcomed angels without knowing it.

τῆςthe φιλοξενίαςhospitality μὴnot ἐπιλανθάνεσθε,I forget, neglect διὰthrough ταύτηςthis γὰρfor ἔλαθόνI am hidden, escape notice τινεςany one, some one ξενίσαντεςI entertain a stranger, I startle ἀγγέλους.an angel, messenger

3

Remember those in prison as if you were in prison with them, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering in the body.

μιμνῄσκεσθεI remember, recall τῶνthe δεσμίωνone bound, a prisoner ὡςas, like as, how, while, so that συνδεδεμένοι,  τῶνthe κακουχουμένων  ὡςas, like as, how, while, so that καὶand, also αὐτοὶhe, his, it ὄντεςto be ἐνin, by σώματι.body, flesh

4

Marriage is to be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers.

τίμιοςof great price, precious, honored ὁthe γάμοςa marriage, wedding, wedding-feast ἐνin, by πᾶσινall, the whole, every kind of καὶand, also ἡthe κοίτηa bed, marriage bed ἀμίαντος,undefiled, untainted πόρνουςa fornicator γὰρfor καὶand, also μοιχοὺςan adulterer κρινεῖI judge, decide, think good ὁthe θεός.God

5

Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, 'I will never leave you; I will never forsake you.'

ἀφιλάργυροςnot loving money, not avaricious ὁthe τρόπος·way, manner, character ἀρκούμενοιI am sufficient, I suffice, am content, satisfied τοῖςthe παροῦσιν·I am present, am near αὐτὸςhe, his, it γὰρfor εἴρηκεν·I say, speak Οὐnot μήnot σεyou ἀνῶI let go, loosen, release, give up, neglect οὐδ’neither, nor, not even οὐnot μήnot σεyou ἐγκαταλίπω·I abandon, desert

6

So we can say with confidence, 'The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?'

ὥστεso that, therefore θαρροῦνταςI am courageous, of good cheer ἡμᾶςI λέγειν·I say, speak Κύριοςlord, Lord, master, sir ἐμοὶI βοηθός,a helper οὐnot φοβηθήσομαι·I fear, am terrified τίany one, some one ποιήσειI do, make μοιI ἄνθρωπος;a man, one of the human race

7

Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.

ΜνημονεύετεI remember, make mention of τῶνthe ἡγουμένωνI lead, think ὑμῶν,you οἵτινεςwhosoever, whichsoever, whatsoever ἐλάλησανto speak ὑμῖνyou τὸνthe λόγονa word, speech, divine utterance, analogy τοῦthe θεοῦ,God ὧνwho, which ἀναθεωροῦντεςI look at attentively, consider τὴνthe ἔκβασινa way out, escape, result τῆςthe ἀναστροφῆςbehavior, manner of life μιμεῖσθεI imitate τὴνthe πίστιν.faith, trust

8

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

ἸησοῦςJesus Χριστὸςanointed, the Messiah, the Christ ἐχθὲς  καὶand, also σήμερονtoday, now ὁthe αὐτός,he, his, it καὶand, also εἰςinto, so that τοὺςthe αἰῶνας.age; the ages, the universe

9

Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings. It is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have never benefited those who were devoted to them.

διδαχαῖςteaching, doctrine ποικίλαιςvarious, of different colors καὶand, also ξέναιςnew, novel, a foreigner μὴnot παραφέρεσθε·I turn aside, carry away, remove καλὸνbeautiful, good, worthy γὰρfor χάριτιgrace, favor, kindness βεβαιοῦσθαιI confirm, ratify τὴνthe καρδίαν,the heart, inner life, intention οὐnot βρώμασιν,food of any kind ἐνin, by οἷςwho, which οὐκnot ὠφελήθησανI help, benefit, do good οἱthe περιπατοῦντες.I walk, conduct my life

10

We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.

ἔχομενI have, hold, possess θυσιαστήριονan altar ἐξout of, from οὗwho, which φαγεῖνI eat οὐκnot ἔχουσινI have, hold, possess ἐξουσίανpower, authority, weight οἱthe τῇthe σκηνῇa tent, tabernacle λατρεύοντες.I serve, worship

11

For the bodies of the animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sin offering are burned outside the camp.

ὧνwho, which γὰρfor εἰσφέρεταιI lead into, bring in ζῴωνan animal τὸthe αἷμαblood περὶabout, concerning, around ἁμαρτίαςa sin εἰςinto, so that τὰthe ἅγιαset apart, holy, sacred διὰthrough τοῦthe ἀρχιερέως,high priest, chief priest τούτωνthis τὰthe σώματαbody, flesh κατακαίεταιI burn up, consume entirely ἔξωwithout, outside τῆςthe παρεμβολῆς·a camp, barracks, army in battle array

12

That is why Jesus also suffered outside the city gate, in order to sanctify the people by his own blood.

διὸwherefore καὶand, also Ἰησοῦς,Jesus ἵναin order that, so that ἁγιάσῃI make holy, sanctify διὰthrough τοῦthe ἰδίουone's own, private, personal αἵματοςblood τὸνthe λαόν,a people, the crowd ἔξωwithout, outside τῆςthe πύληςa door, gate ἔπαθεν.I am acted upon, suffer

13

So let us go out to him outside the camp, bearing the reproach he bore.

τοίνυνindeed now, therefore ἐξερχώμεθαI go out, come out πρὸςto, towards, with αὐτὸνhe, his, it ἔξωwithout, outside τῆςthe παρεμβολῆς,a camp, barracks, army in battle array τὸνthe ὀνειδισμὸνreproach, reviling αὐτοῦhe, his, it φέροντες.I carry, bear, bring, lead

14

For here we do not have a lasting city; we are looking for the city that is to come.

οὐnot γὰρfor ἔχομενI have, hold, possess ὧδεhere μένουσανI remain, abide πόλιν,a city ἀλλὰbut, except τὴνthe μέλλουσανI am about to ἐπιζητοῦμεν·I seek after, desire, search for

15

Through him, then, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name.

δι’through αὐτοῦhe, his, it οὖνtherefore, then ἀναφέρωμενI carry up, lead up, offer up θυσίανsacrifice αἰνέσεωςpraise διὰthrough παντὸςall, the whole, every kind of τῷthe θεῷ,God τοῦτ’this ἔστινto be καρπὸνfruit, result, gain χειλέωνa lip, mouth, shore ὁμολογούντωνI confess, profess, acknowledge, praise τῷthe ὀνόματιname, character, reputation αὐτοῦ.he, his, it

16

And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for God is pleased with such sacrifices.

τῆςthe δὲnow, but εὐποιΐαςdoing of good καὶand, also κοινωνίαςparticipation, communion, fellowship μὴnot ἐπιλανθάνεσθε,I forget, neglect τοιαύταιςof such a kind, such γὰρfor θυσίαιςsacrifice εὐαρεστεῖταιto please ὁthe θεός.God

17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no benefit to you.

ΠείθεσθεI persuade, urge τοῖςthe ἡγουμένοιςI lead, think ὑμῶνyou καὶand, also ὑπείκετε,I yield αὐτοὶhe, his, it γὰρfor ἀγρυπνοῦσινI am awake ὑπὲρin behalf of, above τῶνthe ψυχῶνthe soul, life, self ὑμῶνyou ὡςas, like as, how, while, so that λόγονa word, speech, divine utterance, analogy ἀποδώσοντες,I give back, return, sell ἵναin order that, so that μετὰwith, after χαρᾶςjoy, gladness τοῦτοthis ποιῶσινI do, make καὶand, also μὴnot στενάζοντες,I groan ἀλυσιτελὲςprofitless, unprofitable γὰρfor ὑμῖνyou τοῦτο.this

18

Pray for us, for we are convinced that we have a clear conscience and want to live honorably in every way.

ΠροσεύχεσθεI pray, pray for περὶabout, concerning, around ἡμῶν,I πειθόμεθαI persuade, urge γὰρfor ὅτιthat καλὴνbeautiful, good, worthy συνείδησινthe conscience ἔχομεν,I have, hold, possess ἐνin, by πᾶσινall, the whole, every kind of καλῶςwell, nobly, rightly θέλοντεςI will, wish, desire ἀναστρέφεσθαι.I overturn, turn upside down, return, mid. and pass: I conduct myself, live

19

And I especially urge you to do this, so that I may be restored to you sooner.

20

Now may the God of peace, who brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant,

Ὁthe δὲnow, but θεὸςGod τῆςthe εἰρήνης,peace, peace of mind ὁthe ἀναγαγὼνI lead up, put to sea, set sail ἐκout of, from νεκρῶνdead, a corpse τὸνthe ποιμέναa shepherd τῶνthe προβάτωνa sheep τὸνthe μέγανlarge, great ἐνin, by αἵματιblood διαθήκηςa covenant, will, testament αἰωνίου,eternal, unending τὸνthe κύριονlord, Lord, master, sir ἡμῶνI Ἰησοῦν,Jesus

22

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

Each song is a dynamic equivalent of its chapter, made to help you memorize what is generally there. These are broad summaries. They are not a perfect preservation of everything in Hebrews, and they do not try to be.

We have worked hard to stay faithful to the original. Where we knowingly left something out for the music, we note it under each song. We believe in God’s perfect word, and we ask His mercy wherever we have fallen short. We made these songs to surround ourselves with as much of His word as we can.

Read the chapter itself to receive the full meaning of God’s word.
