Study the Word

The words as they are sung, and Hebrews 2 itself: Paul Whitehorn's translation beside the Greek.

Verse 1

So hold on tighter to what we've heard

or we'll drift right past the harbor

If the word the angels carried stood firm

If the word the angels carried stood firm

and every step out of line got what it earned

how will we ever get away

if we shrug off a rescue this big

The Lord Himself spoke it first

the ones who heard Him made it sure to us

and God stood behind it with signs and wonders

power of every kind and gifts of the Spirit as He chose

Verse 2

He never put the world to come

under the angels' rule

Someone said it somewhere

What is a man, that You keep him in mind

a child of Adam, that You come looking for him

For a little while You set him below the angels

You put a crown of glory and honor on his head

You laid everything down beneath his feet

and left nothing out of his reach

Pre-Chorus

But right now we don't see it

we don't see it all beneath him yet

Chorus

But Jesus is the One we see

set below the angels for a little while

now crowned with glory and honor

because He suffered death

so that by the kindness of God

He would taste death for every one of us

Verse 3

It was right for the One who made all things

It was right for the One who made all things

who brings many sons and daughters into glory

to make the Leader of their rescue

complete through suffering

The One who makes holy and the ones made holy

all come from the same Father

so He is not ashamed

to call them His brothers

I will tell Your name to My brothers

right in the middle of the gathering I will sing to You

I will put My trust in Him

Here I am

with the ones God gave Me

Verse 4

Since His family is flesh and blood

He took on flesh and blood too

so by dying He could break the one

who held the power of death

and set free everyone

kept a slave all their lives by the fear of dying

He doesn't take hold of angels

He takes hold of Abraham's family

so He was made like His brothers in every way

a High Priest full of mercy, faithful before God

to carry away

the sins of the people

Final Chorus

But Jesus is the One we see

crowned with glory and honor

I will tell Your name to My brothers

right in the middle of the gathering I will sing to You

Outro

Because He suffered when He was tested

He can help the ones being tested now

Left out of this song

As far as we know, nothing in this chapter was left out of the song, though many verses are shortened.

Lyrics by Paul Whitehorn: a singable summary of Hebrews 2, as sung on this recording.

1

That is why we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.

Διὰthrough τοῦτοthis δεῖit is necessary (δεῖ) περισσοτέρως  προσέχεινI pay attention to, devote myself to ἡμᾶςI τοῖςthe ἀκουσθεῖσιν,I hear, listen μήποτεlest at any time, lest, perhaps παραρυῶμεν.I am lost, perish, drift away

For if the message spoken through angels proved binding, and every violation and act of disobedience received its just penalty,

how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? It was first announced by the Lord, and it was confirmed to us by those who heard him,

For it is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, the world we are talking about.

What we do see is Jesus, who was made for a little while lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by God's grace he might taste death for everyone.

Since the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise shared the same, so that through death he might break the power of the one who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

Each song is a dynamic equivalent of its chapter, made to help you memorize what is generally there. These are broad summaries. They are not a perfect preservation of everything in Hebrews, and they do not try to be.

We have worked hard to stay faithful to the original. Where we knowingly left something out for the music, we note it under each song. We believe in God’s perfect word, and we ask His mercy wherever we have fallen short. We made these songs to surround ourselves with as much of His word as we can.

Read the chapter itself to receive the full meaning of God’s word.
