Study the Word

The words as they are sung, and Hebrews 4 itself: Paul Whitehorn's translation beside the Greek.

Verse 1

The promise is still standing

the door to His rest is open

so be afraid of one thing only

that any of us comes up short

We heard the good news too

the same as they did in the desert

but the word they heard did them no good

it never mixed with faith in the ones who listened

Pre-Chorus

We who believe

we are walking into rest

So I swore it in My anger

they will never come into My rest

and yet His work was finished

from the day the world was laid down

Somewhere He said of the seventh day

God rested from everything He made

Chorus

A Sabbath-rest is waiting

for the people of God

so lay your own work down

the way He laid down His

Verse 2

So some are still meant to go in

and the first ones who heard it did not

He set another day again

long after, speaking through David

Today

if you hear His voice

don't make your hearts hard

If Joshua had brought them into rest

God would not speak of another day

Whoever goes into His rest

has stopped from his own work too

the way God stopped from His

Chorus 2

A Sabbath-rest is waiting

for the people of God

so lay your own work down

the way He laid down His

Build

So let's hurry, let's run to go in

so nobody falls the same way, not listening

The word of God is alive

it moves, it works

keener than a blade honed on both sides

it goes down to where the soul and the spirit part

down where the joints meet the marrow

it sorts the thoughts

and the aims of the heart

Nothing made can hide from His sight

everything is bare, throat laid open

before the eyes of the One we answer to

So since we have a great High Priest

who has gone up through the heavens

Jesus, the Son of God

let's hold on tight to what we confess

We don't have a priest who can't feel

We don't have a priest who can't feel

what our weakness feels like

He was tested every way we're tested

and He never once sinned

Final Drop

So come near without fear

to the throne where grace is given

to take hold of mercy

and find the help that comes right on time

Final Chorus

A Sabbath-rest is waiting

for the people of God

so lay your own work down

the way He laid down His

Rest

Left out of this song

As far as we know, nothing in this chapter was left out of the song, though many verses are shortened.

Lyrics by Paul Whitehorn: a singable summary of Hebrews 4, as sung on this recording.

1

So let us be afraid, then, that while the promise of entering his rest still stands, any one of you should seem to have fallen short of it.

ΦοβηθῶμενI fear, am terrified οὖνtherefore, then μήποτεlest at any time, lest, perhaps καταλειπομένηςI leave behind, abandon ἐπαγγελίαςa promise εἰσελθεῖνI go in, come in, enter εἰςinto, so that τὴνthe κατάπαυσινresting, rest αὐτοῦhe, his, it δοκῇI think, seem, appear, it seems τιςany one, some one ἐξout of, from ὑμῶνyou ὑστερηκέναι·I am lacking, fall short, suffer need

2

For we also have had the good news announced to us, just as they did. But the message they heard did them no good, because they were not united in faith with those who listened.

καὶand, also γάρfor ἐσμενto be εὐηγγελισμένοιI bring good news, preach good tidings καθάπερeven as κἀκεῖνοι,and he, she, it, and that ἀλλ’but, except οὐκnot ὠφέλησενI help, benefit, do good ὁthe λόγοςa word, speech, divine utterance, analogy τῆςthe ἀκοῆςhearing, faculty of hearing, ear ἐκείνους,that, that one there, yonder μὴnot συγκεκερασμένουςI mix with, unite τῇthe πίστειfaith, trust τοῖςthe ἀκούσασιν.I hear, listen

3

For we who have believed do enter that rest, just as he said: 'So I swore in my anger, "They will never enter my rest,"' even though his works have been finished since the foundation of the world.

εἰσερχόμεθαI go in, come in, enter γὰρfor εἰςinto, so that κατάπαυσινresting, rest οἱthe πιστεύσαντες,to believe καθὼςjust as, as εἴρηκεν·I say, speak Ὡςas, like as, how, while, so that ὤμοσαI swear, take an oath ἐνin, by τῇthe ὀργῇanger, wrath, passion μου,I Εἰif εἰσελεύσονταιI go in, come in, enter εἰςinto, so that τὴνthe κατάπαυσίνresting, rest μου,I καίτοιand yet, although τῶνthe ἔργωνwork, labor, action, deed ἀπὸfrom, away from καταβολῆςa foundation, depositing, sowing κόσμουthe world, universe γενηθέντων,to come to be, be made

4

For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day like this: 'And on the seventh day God rested from all his works.'

εἴρηκενI say, speak γάρfor πουsomewhere περὶabout, concerning, around τῆςthe ἑβδόμηςseventh οὕτως·  Καὶand, also κατέπαυσενI rest, cause to rest ὁthe θεὸςGod ἐνin, by τῇthe ἡμέρᾳa day τῇthe ἑβδόμῃseventh ἀπὸfrom, away from πάντωνall, the whole, every kind of τῶνthe ἔργωνwork, labor, action, deed αὐτοῦ,he, his, it

5

And again in this passage: 'They will never enter my rest.'

καὶand, also ἐνin, by τούτῳthis πάλιν·again, further, on the other hand Εἰif εἰσελεύσονταιI go in, come in, enter εἰςinto, so that τὴνthe κατάπαυσίνresting, rest μου.I

6

Since, then, it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had the good news announced to them did not enter because of disobedience,

ἐπεὶafter, for, since, otherwise οὖνtherefore, then ἀπολείπεταιI leave, leave behind, desert, am reserved τινὰςany one, some one εἰσελθεῖνI go in, come in, enter εἰςinto, so that αὐτήν,he, his, it καὶand, also οἱthe πρότερονformer, before εὐαγγελισθέντεςI bring good news, preach good tidings οὐκnot εἰσῆλθονI go in, come in, enter δι’through ἀπείθειαν,willful unbelief, obstinacy, disobedience

7

he again sets a certain day, 'Today,' saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted: 'Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.'

πάλινagain, further, on the other hand τινὰany one, some one ὁρίζειI define, determine, appoint, decree ἡμέραν,a day Σήμερον,today, now ἐνin, by ΔαυὶδDavid λέγωνI say, speak μετὰwith, after τοσοῦτονso great χρόνον,time, a particular time, season καθὼςjust as, as προείρηται,I forewarn Σήμερονtoday, now ἐὰνif τῆςthe φωνῆςa sound, noise, voice αὐτοῦhe, his, it ἀκούσητε,I hear, listen μὴnot σκληρύνητεI harden τὰςthe καρδίαςthe heart, inner life, intention ὑμῶν·you

8

For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day.

εἰif γὰρfor αὐτοὺςhe, his, it ἸησοῦςJesus κατέπαυσεν,I rest, cause to rest οὐκnot ἂνan untranslatable word that makes a statement contingent περὶabout, concerning, around ἄλληςother, another, different ἐλάλειto speak μετὰwith, after ταῦταthis ἡμέρας.a day

9

So then, a Sabbath rest remains for the people of God.

ἄραa prayer or prayer for evil, a curse, imprecation ἀπολείπεταιI leave, leave behind, desert, am reserved σαββατισμὸςa Sabbath rest τῷthe λαῷa people, the crowd τοῦthe θεοῦ·God

10

For whoever has entered God's rest has also rested from his own works, just as God did from his.

ὁthe γὰρfor εἰσελθὼνI go in, come in, enter εἰςinto, so that τὴνthe κατάπαυσινresting, rest αὐτοῦhe, his, it καὶand, also αὐτὸςhe, his, it κατέπαυσενI rest, cause to rest ἀπὸfrom, away from τῶνthe ἔργωνwork, labor, action, deed αὐτοῦhe, his, it ὥσπερjust as, as ἀπὸfrom, away from τῶνthe ἰδίωνone's own, private, personal ὁthe θεός.God

11

Let us, then, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one falls by following the same example of disobedience.

σπουδάσωμενI hasten οὖνtherefore, then εἰσελθεῖνI go in, come in, enter εἰςinto, so that ἐκείνηνthat, that one there, yonder τὴνthe κατάπαυσιν,resting, rest ἵναin order that, so that μὴnot ἐνin, by τῷthe αὐτῷhe, his, it τιςany one, some one ὑποδείγματιa figure, copy, example πέσῃI fall, fall under τῆςthe ἀπειθείας.willful unbelief, obstinacy, disobedience

12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and it judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

ΖῶνI live γὰρfor ὁthe λόγοςa word, speech, divine utterance, analogy τοῦthe θεοῦGod καὶand, also ἐνεργὴςeffective καὶand, also τομώτεροςsharper, keener ὑπὲρin behalf of, above πᾶσανall, the whole, every kind of μάχαιρανa sword δίστομονtwo-edged καὶand, also διϊκνούμενοςI pass through, pierce ἄχριas far as, up to, until μερισμοῦa distribution, separation ψυχῆςthe soul, life, self καὶand, also πνεύματος,wind, breath, spirit ἁρμῶνa joint of the body τεand, both καὶand, also μυελῶν,marrow καὶand, also κριτικὸςable to judge ἐνθυμήσεωνinward thought, reflection, thoughts καὶand, also ἐννοιῶνthought, intention, purpose καρδίας·the heart, inner life, intention

13

No creature is hidden from his sight; everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of the one to whom we must give account.

καὶand, also οὐκnot ἔστινto be κτίσιςcreation, creature, institution ἀφανὴςinvisible ἐνώπιονbefore the face of, in the presence of αὐτοῦ,he, his, it πάνταall, the whole, every kind of δὲnow, but γυμνὰwearing only the under-garment, bare καὶand, also τετραχηλισμένα  τοῖςthe ὀφθαλμοῖςthe eye αὐτοῦ,he, his, it πρὸςto, towards, with ὃνwho, which ἡμῖνI ὁthe λόγος.a word, speech, divine utterance, analogy

14

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we confess.

ἜχοντεςI have, hold, possess οὖνtherefore, then ἀρχιερέαhigh priest, chief priest μέγανlarge, great διεληλυθόταI pass through, spread a report τοὺςthe οὐρανούς,the sky, the heaven ἸησοῦνJesus τὸνthe υἱὸνa son, descendent τοῦthe θεοῦ,God κρατῶμενI lay hold of, obtain τῆςthe ὁμολογίας·a profession, confession

15

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tested in every way just as we are, yet without sin.

οὐnot γὰρfor ἔχομενI have, hold, possess ἀρχιερέαhigh priest, chief priest μὴnot δυνάμενονI am powerful, am able συμπαθῆσαιI sympathize with, have compassion on ταῖςthe ἀσθενείαιςwant of strength, weakness, illness ἡμῶν,I πεπειρασμένονI try, tempt, test δὲnow, but κατὰdown from, against, according to, throughout, during πάνταall, the whole, every kind of καθ’down from, against, according to, throughout, during ὁμοιότηταlikeness, resemblance χωρὶςwithout, apart from ἁμαρτίας.a sin

16

So let us approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us at the right time.

προσερχώμεθαto come to, approach οὖνtherefore, then μετὰwith, after παρρησίαςfreedom, confidence τῷthe θρόνῳa throne, seat τῆςthe χάριτος,grace, favor, kindness ἵναin order that, so that λάβωμενI receive, take ἔλεοςpity, mercy καὶand, also χάρινgrace, favor, kindness εὕρωμενto find εἰςinto, so that εὔκαιρονtimely, suitable βοήθειαν.assistance, a help

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

Each song is a dynamic equivalent of its chapter, made to help you memorize what is generally there. These are broad summaries. They are not a perfect preservation of everything in Hebrews, and they do not try to be.

We have worked hard to stay faithful to the original. Where we knowingly left something out for the music, we note it under each song. We believe in God’s perfect word, and we ask His mercy wherever we have fallen short. We made these songs to surround ourselves with as much of His word as we can.

Read the chapter itself to receive the full meaning of God’s word.
