Study the Word

The words as they are sung, and Hebrews 8 itself: Paul Whitehorn's translation beside the Greek.

Verse 1

Here's the point of all we're saying

we have a High Priest like this

He sat down at the right hand

of the throne of the Majesty in heaven

serving in the holy place

in the true tent

the Lord set up, not a man

Every high priest is set in place

to bring gifts and sacrifices

so this one had to have something to offer too

If He were on the earth

He would not be a priest at all

there are men who bring the gifts by the law

They serve a copy and a shadow

of what is in heaven

just like Moses was warned

when he was about to build the tent

See that you make it all

by the pattern I showed you on the mountain

Pre-Chorus

But now He has a ministry far better

as much as the covenant is better

that He stands between

built on better promises

DROP into Chorus

I will write it on their hearts

I will be their God

and they will be Mine

I will show them mercy

and remember their sins no more

Verse 2

If that first covenant had no fault

there'd be no need to look for a second

But He found fault with them and said

Look, the days are coming, says the Lord

when I will finish a new covenant

with the house of Israel

and with the house of Judah

not like the covenant I made with their fathers

on the day I took them by the hand

to lead them out of Egypt

because they did not stay in My covenant

and I turned away from them, says the Lord

DROP into Chorus

I will write it on their hearts

I will be their God

and they will be Mine

I will show them mercy

and remember their sins no more

DROP into Chorus

I will write it on their hearts

I will be their God

and they will be Mine

I will show them mercy

and remember their sins no more

Breakdown

This is the covenant I will make

with the house of Israel after those days

I will put My laws into their minds

and write them on their hearts

No one will have to teach his neighbor

or tell his brother, Know the Lord

because they will all know Me

from the least of them to the greatest

Final Drop

I will write it on their hearts

I will be their God

and they will be Mine

I will show them mercy

and remember their sins no more

When He says new

He has made the first one old

and what is getting old and wearing out

is about to disappear

Remember their sins no more

Left out of this song

As far as we know, nothing in this chapter was left out of the song, though many verses are shortened.

Lyrics by Paul Whitehorn: a singable summary of Hebrews 8, as sung on this recording.

1

The main point of what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who has sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,

Κεφάλαιονthe chief matter, a sum of money δὲnow, but ἐπὶupon, concerning τοῖςthe λεγομένοις,I say, speak τοιοῦτονof such a kind, such ἔχομενI have, hold, possess ἀρχιερέα,high priest, chief priest ὃςwho, which ἐκάθισενI set, make to sit ἐνin, by δεξιᾷon the right hand, right hand, right τοῦthe θρόνουa throne, seat τῆςthe μεγαλωσύνηςmajesty ἐνin, by τοῖςthe οὐρανοῖς,the sky, the heaven

2

a minister in the sanctuary, the true tent that the Lord set up, not man.

τῶνthe ἁγίωνset apart, holy, sacred λειτουργὸςa minister, servant καὶand, also τῆςthe σκηνῆςa tent, tabernacle τῆςthe ἀληθινῆς,true, real, genuine ἣνwho, which ἔπηξενI pitch a tent ὁthe κύριος,lord, Lord, master, sir οὐκnot ἄνθρωπος.a man, one of the human race

3

Every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices, so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer.

πᾶςall, the whole, every kind of γὰρfor ἀρχιερεὺςhigh priest, chief priest εἰςinto, so that τὸthe προσφέρεινto offer, bring δῶράgift τεand, both καὶand, also θυσίαςsacrifice καθίσταται·I set, establish, appoint, conduct ὅθενwhence, wherefore ἀναγκαῖονnecessary, essential ἔχεινI have, hold, possess τιany one, some one καὶand, also τοῦτονthis ὃwho, which προσενέγκῃ.to offer, bring

4

Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are already priests who offer the gifts according to the law.

εἰif μὲνtruly, indeed οὖνtherefore, then ἦνto be ἐπὶupon, concerning γῆς,the earth, soil, land οὐδ’neither, nor, not even ἂνan untranslatable word that makes a statement contingent ἦνto be ἱερεύς,a priest ὄντωνto be τῶνthe προσφερόντωνto offer, bring κατὰdown from, against, according to, throughout, during νόμονa law, the Mosaic Law τὰthe δῶρα·gift

5

They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of the heavenly one. That is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tent: 'See that you make everything according to the pattern shown to you on the mountain.'

(οἵτινεςwhosoever, whichsoever, whatsoever ὑποδείγματιa figure, copy, example καὶand, also σκιᾷa shadow, thick darkness, an outline λατρεύουσινI serve, worship τῶνthe ἐπουρανίων,heavenly, celestial καθὼςjust as, as κεχρημάτισταιI warn, am publicly called Μωϋσῆς  μέλλωνI am about to ἐπιτελεῖνI complete, accomplish, perfect τὴνthe σκηνήν,a tent, tabernacle Ὅραto see γάρ,for φησίν,I say ποιήσειςI do, make πάνταall, the whole, every kind of κατὰdown from, against, according to, throughout, during τὸνthe τύπονa figure, model, type τὸνthe δειχθένταI point out, show σοιyou ἐνin, by τῷthe ὄρει)·a mountain

6

But now Jesus has obtained a far superior ministry, just as the covenant he mediates is better, since it has been enacted on better promises.

νυνὶnow, already, at present δὲnow, but διαφορωτέραςdiffering, different, excellent τέτυχενI obtain, I happen, perhaps λειτουργίας,a charitable gift, public service ὅσῳhow much, how great, how many καὶand, also κρείττονόςstronger, more excellent ἐστινto be διαθήκηςa covenant, will, testament μεσίτης,a mediator, go-between ἥτιςwhosoever, whichsoever, whatsoever ἐπὶupon, concerning κρείττοσινstronger, more excellent ἐπαγγελίαιςa promise νενομοθέτηται.

7

For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need to look for a second one.

Εἰif γὰρfor ἡthe πρώτηfirst, before ἐκείνηthat, that one there, yonder ἦνto be ἄμεμπτος,blameless οὐκnot ἂνan untranslatable word that makes a statement contingent δευτέραςsecond, in the second place, for the second time ἐζητεῖτοI seek, search for, desire τόπος·a place

8

But God found fault with the people and said: 'The days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

μεμφόμενοςI blame, censure γὰρfor αὐτοὺςhe, his, it λέγει·I say, speak ἸδοὺSee! Lo! Behold! 9

It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, says the Lord.

οὐnot κατὰdown from, against, according to, throughout, during τὴνthe διαθήκηνa covenant, will, testament ἣνwho, which ἐποίησαI do, make τοῖςthe πατράσινfather, Father, ancestor αὐτῶνhe, his, it ἐνin, by ἡμέρᾳa day ἐπιλαβομένουI seize, take hold of μουI τῆςthe χειρὸςa hand αὐτῶνhe, his, it ἐξαγαγεῖνI lead out αὐτοὺςhe, his, it ἐκout of, from γῆςthe earth, soil, land Αἰγύπτου,Egypt ὅτιthat αὐτοὶhe, his, it οὐκnot ἐνέμεινανI remain or abide in, abide by, maintain ἐνin, by τῇthe διαθήκῃa covenant, will, testament μου,I κἀγὼI also, I too ἠμέλησαI neglect αὐτῶν,he, his, it λέγειI say, speak κύριος.lord, Lord, master, sir

10

This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, "Know the Lord," because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.

καὶand, also οὐnot μὴnot διδάξωσινI teach ἕκαστοςeach, every one τὸνthe πολίτηνa citizen αὐτοῦhe, his, it καὶand, also ἕκαστοςeach, every one τὸνthe ἀδελφὸνa brother αὐτοῦ,he, his, it λέγων·I say, speak ΓνῶθιI come to know, learn, realize τὸνthe κύριον,lord, Lord, master, sir ὅτιthat πάντεςall, the whole, every kind of εἰδήσουσίνI know, remember μεI ἀπὸfrom, away from μικροῦlittle, small ἕωςuntil, as far as μεγάλουlarge, great αὐτῶν.he, his, it

By calling this covenant 'new,' he has made the first one old; and what is becoming old and aging is about to disappear.

What These Songs Are, and What They Are Not

Each song is a dynamic equivalent of its chapter, made to help you memorize what is generally there. These are broad summaries. They are not a perfect preservation of everything in Hebrews, and they do not try to be.

We have worked hard to stay faithful to the original. Where we knowingly left something out for the music, we note it under each song. We believe in God’s perfect word, and we ask His mercy wherever we have fallen short. We made these songs to surround ourselves with as much of His word as we can.

Read the chapter itself to receive the full meaning of God’s word.
